What Everybody Is Getting Wrong About FIRE

https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2018/10/05/the-fire-movement/From Mr. Money Mustache …

In case you hadn’t already noticed it in the news, it seems we are hitting a  turning point in how the rest of the world perceives this lifestyle that you and I have been enjoying.

And suddenly, instead of just a blogger or a few millennials here and there, the media is starting to call it the Financial Independence Movement. And this is a big deal, because when it comes to cultural traditions, perception pretty much defines reality.

There’s a tricky paradox going on here: the more people you reach, the bigger the range of misconceptions that will come up, potentially cockblocking your movement before it really takes off.

So, with that in mind, let’s clean up the biggest bits of WRONG that are preventing the latest round of several million new arrivals from fully enjoying the fruits of their own labor.

PODCAST: MR. MONEY MUSTACHE – LIVING BEAUTIFULLY ON $25,000 PER YEAR

June 10, 2018 Leave a Comment

From Tim Ferriss with guest Mr. Money Mustache…

“Mr. Money Mustache — Pete Adeney in real life) grew up in Canada in a family of mostly eccentric musicians. He graduated with a degree in computer engineering in the 1990s and worked in various tech companies before retiring at age 30. Pete, his wife, and their now eleven-year-old son live near Boulder, Colorado, and have not had real jobs since 2005.

This begs the question of “How?” In essence, they accomplished this early retirement by optimizing all aspects of their lifestyle for maximal fun at minimal expense, and by using basic index-fund investing. Their average annual expenses total a mere $25-27,000, and they do not feel in want of anything.”

THE IMPACT OF YOUR SAVINGS RATE ON YOUR TIME TO FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

April 1, 2018 Leave a Comment

From Joshua Sheats at Radical Personal Finance …

“Somewhere around 2011 I had my world rocked by reading Early Retirement Extreme by Jacob Lund Fisker. The most useful concept I took from that book was the huge connection between savings rates and years to financial independence.

A year or so later the popular finance blogger Mr. Money Mustache published a post called “The Shockingly Simple Math Behind Early Retirement” in which he laid out in chart form the connection between the percentage of income saved and the years to work until retirement.  That chart is powerful.

Since reading that chart I have shared it with dozens of people to empasize the value of controling the major thing they can control, which is their level of expenses. In today’s show I share with you the details of this approach.”

How to be Happy, Rich, and Save the World

March 4, 2018 Leave a Comment

An excerpt from Mr. Money Mustache … “The challenge in this case was to present a concise summary of financial independence and early retirement, how and why you’d want to do it, and why this is a actually good and ethical thing to pursue. I tried to make the case by walking through the following three logical steps:

  • Almost everyone (currently) sucks at money
  • Getting rich enough to retire takes way less time than most of us think (about 10 years)
  • Work is better when you don’t need the money”
